Queen Elizabeth II travelled to a great many places during her seven decades on the throne, with Barnsley being one of them.
Her Majesty, who died over a week ago, alongside her late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, visited the town on at least three separate occasions during her reign, in 1954, 1975 and 1977.
1954
The first visit of Her Majesty to Barnsley came in October 1954, just 2 years after she ascended to the throne, during a tour of South Yorkshire. Her visit was a short one, walking down Regent Street before signing a book on the dais in front of The Town Hall, whilst the excited crowd watched on, before leaving after the national album.

1975
The Queen’s next visit would come just over 20 years later, in 1975 as part of another tour of South Yorkshire. During the visit, about an hour in total, the Queen went to the Barnsley Market, chatting to the stall owners, receiving some flowers from the crowd as well as meeting some British nurses from the Red Cross.

1977
The most recent visit Her Majesty paid to Barnsley happened just 2 years later, in July 1977, as part of her Silver Jubilee celebrating 25 years on the throne. Whilst her previous 2 visits were mainly confined to the town centre, the third visit instead took place at Cannon Hall, thousands came out to see the royal couple, with many children in particular taking part in the event.

If there is one thing that can be said about The Queen, it is that she cared about every single one of her subjects. She showed this by visiting as many of them as possible, whether they are from the largest cities or local villages.
