October is a great month! It’s autumn and Halloween, so a very good excuse to snuggle up into a blanket, grab a warm drink, light some candles, and delve into some spooky stories! Here are 3 of my favourite reads that fit perfectly with dark nights and scary vibes.
1.Unnatural Causes – Dr Richard Shepherd Based on a true story, forensic pathologist, Dr Richard Shepherd, walks you through his life as pathologist during the 1980’s. He works on all types of cases – from terrorist attacks to natural deaths – as well as working through a time changing period. He sees how technology starts becoming a lot more advanced, meaning that autopsies become more accurate. This book is packed with gory, but interesting details that leave you with a new perspective of the pathologist world. It’s definitely a great read for those into medical subjects, and fits with the Halloween season!
2.Murder On The Orient Express – Agatha Christie Retired private detective, Hercule Poirot, boards the Taurus Express and becomes suspicious of a particular couple. Later on in the story, Poirot re-joins the couple on the Orient Express, which he boards in Stamboul, and they seek help from the retired detective as they begin receiving threatening letters, which starts to alarm them. Poirot refuses the case, and doesn’t want to work for the couple, but later on, after a murder has taken place, he decides to help with the case to uncover the mystery. After many interviews, luggage checks, and investigations we see Poirot uncover the truth… This novel is very gripping, and Agatha Christie takes you on a whirlwind adventure.
3. The Chain – Adrian McKinty This dystopian novel takes a modern twist on kidnapping. Using the arts of technology, we see each character use different online, using their phones and computers, methods to try and save their loved ones! Mckinty splits the book into two halves – in the first half we see a mother use all her strength to get her daughter back home safe, but the only way she can get her back is by kidnapping someone else. It takes you through a rollercoaster of emotions as you start to build a connection with the characters, and share their remorse, fear and hope throughout. The second half, however, focuses more on how the mother got her daughter back, and has a gruesome ending which is full of action and terror. The modern elements of this story add a large amount of suspense and leaves you gripped to the storyline. This has been one of my favourite reads this year, and I recommend it for the spooky season!
