The arrogant side of Twitter

Isaac Sutton

Twitter is an interesting place where any one can share their opinion towards people who may agree and who may not. On one hand twitter has helped launch many people’s careers simply by giving there take on a story or dilemma. On the other hand, in more recent times twitter has also become a place for bigoted opinions and pure lies in some case, for example this so called “affiliated journalist” making a post in a report style structure claiming normal people stood in a circle are blocking the path “So that the college girls have to walk through them”

Astonishingly this twitter account boasts 14.5k followers regardless of these pure and undoubted lies. The owner of this account evidently looks for a reason regardless of if there actually is one to make racist remarks when ever possible. The comments under this post were surprisingly mixed some people some how agreeing with the statement and then obviously some people using common sense.

This is just one example of many where so called “journalists” have just taken an opportunity to express the false opinions to the downfall of others. In this case showing the faces of three innocent men claiming that they are preying on the innocent. This is a serious case of defamation of character which can be a serious issue in court. “Defamation is a false statement which discredits a person's character or reputation. If it is spoken it is called slander. If it is published in print, or through some form of media, it is called libel.

A defamatory statement is one that is communicated to at least one person other than the subject.” Defamation of character can is a genuine criminal offence with punishments such as huge fines. So, when you think you are just giving your opinion on twitter be very careful how you word what you are saying and who you are targeting it towards as “twitter cancellation” can seriously ruin a career or put off a company from employing you based off your digital footprint.

I personally see twitter as a blessing and a curse on one hand it allows people to express their opinions but sadly some people think this is a green card to insult and attack whoever they please. I think the example I used shows this perfectly, as people just enjoying there day have been accused of something absurd for simply standing in a town centre minding their own business. The fact we still live in a world where people can express such hatred to each other based on something such as skin colour really shows that some people need to have a reality check.
