The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse organization sets out to protect children from any form of abuse. This morning they published a report investigating Sexual Abuse within the Anglican Church.

The report, published on Tuesday the 6th October, delves into the numerous reports and cases of sexual abuse, grooming and rape in the church, dating back to the 1940s up until 2018. There has been exactly 390 convicted offenders in this time.

In the report, three people who had been convicted were named along with the crimes that they committed.

Timothy Storey was a youth leader in the diocese of London throughout the years 2002-2007. He is currently serving 15 years in prison for many offenses, including rape towards children. The organisation is aware of 19 complaints against Victor Whitsey, including sexual assault of young girls and boys whilst receiving pastoral support. Reverend Trevor Devamanikkam was a priest until 1996, and allegedly raped and indecently assaulted a teenage boy.

Over time, evidence found that The Church of England protected the offenders, forgave them and were allows to carry on working within the sector.

The report also suggests that the response the church made towards the victims hasn’t been consistent and lacked ‘sympathy and compassion’, without offering any type of support.
