Sheffield Wednesday fixture roundup

Since my last Sheffield Wednesday match review for the Cambridge game I took a break and a lot has happened in that time, 5 matches to be exact,

first up was Lincoln at home and the start of the game was overshadowed by the fact that Marvin Johnson was lining up on the left of a back three for the owls,

the winger had been playing at left back in recent games and had been criticised for his performances by the owls fans so when they saw him in the back three questions were being asked of Darren Moore but it seems it a bit of a master stroke from the manager as Johnson seems to have made the position his own,

but Wednesday didn’t play well here, they scored against the run of play in the 55th minute as Dennis Adeniran pounced on the rebound for his third goal of the season after Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s shot was saved but Wednesday couldn’t hold on for a much needed win as Lewis Montsma glanced in a header to give Lincoln a point which was the least they deserved,

an away trip to Cheltenham was up next and it was yet another poor performance in the first half as Kyle Vassell gave the Robins the lead and tempers were threatening to boil over in the away end at half time, but Wednesday managed to battle back in the second half with a goal from Chey Dunkley and an own goal from Matty Blair which put the owls in front,

the last time Wednesday came from behind to win was December 2019 but I think everyone knew what was going to happen going into the last few minutes and their fears came true as Matty Blair made up for his own goal as he headed in Cheltenham’s last minute equalizer,

it’s starting to feel like a curse, Wednesday desperately needed a reaction and they duly obliged with a great performance against out of form Sunderland at Hillsborough, the owls played with an energy that hadn’t been seen yet this season,

on loan wolves man Theo Corbeanu gave Wednesday with a great first time finish on 11 minutes then he turned provider for Florian Kamberi to double Wednesday’s lead before half time, the result was put beyond doubt by the 53rd minute as Lee Gregory notched his 6th goal of the season to put Wednesday 3-0 up,

Sunderland never really threatened the owls and hopefully this shows that the team have finally clicked, the last two games were a break from the league first with an FA cup first tie against league one high flyers Plymouth,

it was a drab affair with not many clear cut chances, Owls goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell pulled off a brilliant save to deny Jordan Garrick,

Wednesday felt they should have had a penalty when MideShodipo went down in the box but nothing was given so a replay at home park it is, then finally last nights papa johns trophy game against Harrogate,

both teams had already booked their place in the knockout stage but the winner would top the group and get the advantage of a home fixture in the next round, the winner was Wednesday with a comfortable looking score line of 4-0,

the reality was that the score line flattered the owls, they had Joe Wildsmith to thank as Harrogate had more clear cut chances than Wednesday, but luckily Wednesday were clinical in the final third as goals from SaidoBerahino, George Byers, Sylla Sow and a penalty from youngster Korede Adedoyin meant that the owls topped Group H.
