Sergio Aguero: Manchester City Record Goal Scorer Announces Retirement

Sergio Aguero, 5-time premier league champion and Manchester City’s all-time record goal-scorer, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 33, following recent heart trouble that has side-lined him this season.
Aguero started his senior career in 2003, playing his first professional game for Argentine club Independiente at the age of 15. He played for Independiente until 2006, scoring 23 goals for the club in the process, when he moved to Spanish side Atletico Madrid for a reported fee of around 20 million euros. In 5 years there he scored 102 goals and won the Europa League in 2010. Aguero will be mostly remembered for time at Manchester City, where in a decade at the club he scored 184 goals in the Premier League and 260 goals in all competitions, winning 5 Premier Leagues, a FA Cup, 6 League Cups, 3 Community Shield’s, a Premier League Golden Boot and a Champions League runner-up Medal. His most famous goal, however, would have to be his goal in the 93rd minute of Manchester City’s 3-2 win over QPR on the final day of the 2011/2012 season, which won Manchester City there first premier league title. He also had success in international football, making 101 appearances for Argentina, scoring 41 goals for them in this time, winning a Olympic Gold Medal with Argentina’s Under-21’s, as well as winning the 2021 Copa America, and reaching the final of the 2014 World Cup.

Aguero signed for Spanish side Barcelona in the summer of 2021, however financial issues at thew club led to both a delay in his registration as well as the departure of Aguero’s long-time friend, Lionel Messi. Aguero only played 5 times for the Catalonia club, not playing until October due to a calf injury, scoring his last career goal in a 2-1 defeat against Real Madrid. However, a heart condition has now forced Aguero to retire.
