The French Haas driver miraculously escaped with his life following a crash, which saw his car burst into a ball of flames.
F1 has always been seen as a dangerous sport and it once again showed why only the bravest could make it following another horrendous crash. Romain has said that he “saw death coming” and “fought to get out for my children”.
He escaped with minor injuries compared to the scale of the crash. He burnt his hands as he jumped over the railings, which were hot due to the fire and his ankles. So clearly the protective clothing in which they wear worked. However, the gloves they wear must be thin so they have control over the car.
The car actually split in half on impact and the half of the car, which Romain was in, was the one that was set on fire. The safety team did a fantastic job of getting to the car and helping Romain out and putting the fire out almost instantly.
He was released from hospital this morning and only has to wear the strapping on the palm of his hand, not his entire hand. This is something he described as a huge step towards recovery.
