REVIEW: Andor changes the narrative of Star Wars

Amie Harvey

Andor pushing the boundaries for what we have already seen leaves us to question what’s next for the future of Star Wars?

With the release of the long anticipated first three episodes of the Andor TV show the expectations are high after the delay. The Jedi narrative that has been with the franchise as a staple since the beginning is left behind by ditching the lightsabers and replacing them with blasters in the hands of rebelling citizens.

The state the galaxy was left in after Episode III is made a little more apparent as we see more of what happened to the people and planets when the Jedi were not around.

The early days of the rebellion have endless uncovered territory for the franchise with an abundance of possibilities to come; Andor continues to explore the thinly scratched surface that is the early days of the rebellion following Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and his origins taking place before the well rated Rogue One (2016) The show is guaranteed to entice old fans as well as new ones with the birth of the rebellion and how it grew to be as we know it in the original trilogy.

By leaving behind the past of the franchise to create something organic and fresh, the TV show works as a gateway for beginners to get into the franchise without backstory and pressure to recognise cameos.

The show avoids fan service and easter eggs which we saw in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series earlier this year. This may be a hit and miss amongst already existing fans but for those up for change the growing representation of the beginning of the rebellion is a very exciting change which we are guaranteed to see more of in the Ahsoka series set to release in 2023.

The episodes to come will be only available on Disney+ showing as a 12 episode series. Andor has been confirmed to have a season 2 consisting of another 12 episodes; filming for that season begins during November 2022 finishing up in August 2023.

Confirmation of a season 2 leads us to question what is next for Star Wars and is safe to assume that this will be unanswered as the galaxy is made broader with each different TV show adding onto the limitless stories to be told.
