Professor Ugur Sahin, German scientist and co-founder of BioNTech, stated in an interview with a UK broadcaster that the COVID vaccine could be available to use in mid-December, depending on whether UK regulators licence it in time.

Professor Sahin stated that even when these vaccines are issued out to people in mid-December, they won’t “dramatically change” the situation, and that this situation will “become worse before it becomes better.” This vaccine will definitely help the UK return to some form of normality but not until the middle of next year.

Urgur Sahin also mentioned that the vaccine being 90% effective is an “outstanding result,” but he also said he doesn’t expect it to be this effective, as a “serious” scientist. Sahin believes the Pfizer vaccine will be between “60, 70 and 80%” effective opposed to the potential 90% chance.

The professor urged people to wear a mask, stay vigilant, and adhere to social distancing while we wait for government approvals and safety checks, as “everyone has a responsibility” (quote from Ugur Sahin), not just the government, so “avoid” being in room with “too many people.”

The BioNTech co-founder said to Sky News that “it was a logical decision to start as soon as possible - It was very clear that we had no time to lose," as the vaccine started production in January, when COVID hit Germany.

In a period of 9 months the production of the Pfizer vaccine has developed well, and hopefully Ugur Sahin can be the person who helps bring the pandemic to a standstill, putting minds at ease and enabling society to recreate normality.
