Tonight’s Football League Trophy matches bring about a South Yorkshire Derby between Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat stadium with teams having hopes of a win to help their progression through the tournament.
Neither side are coming into this with a win, with Doncaster having drawn 1-1 with Leyton Orient whilst Barnsley lost 2-0 to Exeter City, both matches at home. Both sides are doing decently in the league overall, with Doncaster sitting 8th in league 2 whilst Barnsley sit 5th in league 1, both clubs having been relegated last season. Doncaster currently stand 1st in the group, having defeated Newcastle Under-21’s 4-2 on penalties after a 0-0 draw as well as beating Lincoln City 2-1, whilst Barnsley sit 3rd, having lost 3-0 to Lincoln but winning 2-0 against Newcastle.
Both sides do have history with the competition, with Doncaster having lifted the trophy back in 2006/2007, after beating Bristol 3-2 in extra time after a 2-2 score line at full time, whilst Barnsley took the trophy home in 2015/2016, beating Oxford United 3-2 in the final to do so.
The last time these two clubs faced each other were in 18/19, when both clubs were in league 1.
Both matches ended in a draw, 1-1 at Oakwell and 0-0 at the Keepmoat.
Both clubs will fancy that this is a winnable match, but at the same time they may not play their full team, as the Football League Trophy is not necessarily the most important of trophies, but at the same time, you can never know.
