19 year-old, Zac Adan, a French linguistics student studying at Manchester University, says security officers racially profiled him after leaving the local shop.

Manchester University has been prevalent in the news lately when students tore down the fence around the school that was installed at the start of the lockdown for extra safety measures. Now, merely a few weeks later, Zac Adan says he is ‘traumatised’ since this event and ‘can’t sleep’.

He says that while walking to his halls of residence, two security guards approached him and asked to see his ID. Zac Adan also said he was accused of ‘looking like a drug dealer’ as the security officers said that there had been reports of drug dealings going on campus and he ‘didn’t look like he belonged here’.

The university has since said they are ‘deeply concerned by these images’ and were investigating this ‘serious incident’. The security officers have been suspended pending the investigation the school is taking out.

Zac also claimed that they ‘tried to snatch the ID from his hand’ and that there ‘was no conversation they just pinned me up against the wall and said I looked like a drug dealer. Why? Because I’m black and wearing a hoodie?’ The officer’s response was ‘when you showed your card you just covered up your face that’s all’ many students in the video then responded to the officers telling them that they are ‘not wearing a mask’ and to ‘stand two feet away’.

Zac, who says he is the ‘first in his family to go to university’ says that his parents are now begging him to come home. A spokesperson for the university stated that they have ‘been in regular contact with the affected party’ and that the ‘safety and wellbeing’ of their students is of ‘the utmost importance’ and that they take these kinds of allegations extremely serious.
