How Anthony Joshua could Better Tyson Fury

Adam Weightman

As the Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua fight waits to be agreed (possibly for the 3rd of December) Fans are in for a good fight from 2 of the UK’s most successful an established boxers.

Tyson Fury was supposedly fighting Oleksandr Usyk, however claims of the Ukrainian “running, hiding” and Fury disrespectfully labelled the well decorated Ukrainian Boxer a “Middleweight”.

The fight could been announced for the 3rd of December, hosted at the Principality Stadium in Wales. This came as a shock venue for the fight since the suspected venues for the matchup were rumoured to be stadiums likes Old Trafford (Home of Manchester United) or even Wembley.

Tyson’s last fight was hosted at a full capacity Wembley and was reported as the ”final curtain call of the Gyspy King.” This was a 12 round bout which only lasted 6 rounds. After Fury KO’d Dillian Whyte at a sold-out Wembley with 94,000 in attendance, with a box-office fan base watching at home.

Meanwhile, Joshua’s last fight (to potentially Tyson’s future opponent Oleksandr Usyk) ended in defeat through a split decision - which he later attributed to the fact he wasn't a 12-round fighter.

Tyson’s record consists of 32 wins, with 23 of them coming from KO, that including one draw to Deontay Wilder in his first of his three fights against the Bronze Bomber. This compares to Joshua’s 24 wins and three losses to Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019, and then twice to Oleksandr Usyk in September last year and recently in October.

Personally, in my opinion if Joshua wants to win, he would have to end the fight early and bank on that. This is because Tyson’s stamina is unmatchable and if Joshua is not a “12 round fighter” it could be worrying for him in the later rounds. Tyson’s combinations are also good and similar what Usyk threw in their most recent fight so that could also cause issues for Joshua.

I asked a representative who works for www.basemma.com who is a combat sports fan with boxing experience fighting two white collar fights.

"I think it goes a similar way that the Usyk vs Joshua fight went, with AJ swinging and missing.” And that, “I see the fight as unanimous decision for Fury.” After that I asked whether the fight makes sense because for me it doesn’t make sense since AJ lost, and it would make more sense for Tyson to fight Usyk before fighting AJ to gain all the belts. Basemma Replied, "The fight, I personally think does make sense. Not so much for hard-line boxing fans, who would have preferred to see Fury defeat Usyk first and take all the belts. But for the UK scene, a fight doesn't get any bigger than this, perhaps a few years too late but better late than never.”

There is not doubt that monumental brain power plays a crucial part when entering the ring. Basemma agrees stating "you're not really thinking. In the lead up, you feel every emotion under the sun. You are nervous, feel sick, worried, anxious. My legs felt like jelly, and I was terrified of being knocked out in the first round in front of all friends and family. I have to remind myself that all these feelings are normal and essentially the "fight or flight"

Many fans are excited for this worldwide event which could down in boxing history. 2 of the decorated fighters. Both from the UK. This is guaranteed to be a good fight.
