Euphoria: Review - "The cinematography was outstanding..."

Aimee Szarvas

Euphoria, an American teen drama created by Sam Levinson, who loosely based the show on the Israeli television series ‘Euphoria’ which was created by Ron Lesheminin 2012. Levinson based this series of ‘Euphoria’ on his own experiences as a teenager including his struggles with anxiety, depression and drug addiction.

The show follows high school students and their experiences with sex, drugs, friendships, love, identity and trauma. The show starring many young actors such as Zendaya, Maude Apatow, Jacob Eldori , Alexi demi, Barbie Ferreira, hunter Schafer and many more playing integral roles within the show.

Many critics reviewed the show positively, praising the cinematography, story, performances and its approach to mature subject matter; however, this became a subject of controversy due to its nudity and sexual content and was seen as excessive by some critics.

On the review website ‘Rotten Tomatoes’, the first season got a positive score of 82% and a rating of 7.31/10 based on 93 critical reviews. The show was trending instantly, the premier averaged 577,000 viewers in not time at all, which then increased to one million, leading to the hashtag ‘#EuphoriaHBO’ trending number one in the united states and number three worldwide.

I too also think that the cinematography was extremely outstanding as well as the performances, especially Zendaya and Hunter Schafer as these two roles have an amazing chemistry on screen. I also love the music chosen; a soundtrack which was created by singer-songwriter, Labrinth. Even the amazing makeup the actors wore throughout the show was of a high level! This caused Euphoria to win an Emmy for the ‘most outstanding makeup’ . The looks even became a trend on social media too.

The amount of detail in the episodes for season one was just amazing to me. Most episodes had a title name and they were linked to a song from the 2000’s, for example the episode ’03 Bonnie and Clyde’ is in reference to the 2002 Jay-Z and Beyonce song ’03 Bonnie and Clyde’ as this episode is about a couple within the show and how they function together.

I think many will be rather ecstatic to learn that a new season of Euphoria has been commissioned. The new storyline and the iconic looks will again be a big hit again!
