Elliot Page comes out as transgender

Evie Sheldon

Known for his roles in the critically acclaimed Juno and Netflix’s Umbrella Academy, Oscar-nominated actor, Elliot Page comes out as transgender in a heartfelt and passionate statement uploaded to social media last night.

His statement began with “Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot…” later going on to state, “…I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self…”

Elliot’s statement came at a vital time after a legal case regarding puberty blocker drugs finally concluded in the UK. Trans charities and communities have called this case “scary” for the future of trans children’s rights and the further struggles they will face due to this case.

Page’s statement felt even more topical with this knowledge, his words seeming to reflect the pain that thousands of trans people experience because of society. He stated, “…The discrimination against trans people is rife, insidious and cruel, resulting in horrific consequences. In 2020 alone it has been reported that at least 40 transgender people have been murdered…”

Continuing with, “…To the political leaders who work to criminalize trans health care and deny our right to exist and to all those with a massive platform who continue to spew hostility towards the trans community: you have blood on your hands. You unleash a fury of vile and demeaning rage that lands on the shoulders of the trans community...”

In response to Elliot’s statement, many celebrities and companies reached out in support. Youtube influencer, Tyler Oakley tweeted, “sending so much love, @TheElliotPage!! Thank you for being you.” Along with Netflix who tweeted, “So proud of our superhero!...”
