In January this year, a two year old boy was killed in Doncaster. Today, his Stepfather has been sentenced for murder and child cruelty, and his Mother has been sentenced for child cruelty and for allowing her son to be murdered. This was announced at Sheffield Crown Court.
The little boy, Keigan, was killed by his 36 year old Stepfather, Martin Currie, as he hit his head against a wall consecutively, as his Mother, Sarah O’Brien was out of the house. It then took 2 hours for the couple to report Keigan to the emergency services, when they found him and he was unresponsive. Once the emergency services arrived, they found a bleed on Keigan’s brain, which was caused by the wall.
During the court case, it was stated that Keiagn’s mother had committed “serious neglect and serious cruelty,” and that Keigan had several injuries to his “spine, ribs and brain” prior to his death. Keigan’s parents had also previously adjusted his bedroom door handle and locked him in so he could not get out. The court also mentioned that Currie had previousy had a substance addiction and took heroin. These are a few warning signs that the little boy was in danger. His death was described as a “catastrophic brain injury,” and as an “irreversible brain injury” by members of the jury.
Overall, the judge stated that Currie would be sentenced to 22 years in prison, and that, 33 year old, O’Brien would be sentenced to a minimum of 8 years in prison.
