News has broken out that Dominic Cummings, Boris Johnson’s chief adviser, has left 10 Downing Street with immediate effect.
Cummings has released he planned to leave Downing Street since early this year, however has left his position early and will not be returning.
He was originally due to resign in mid-December, however after reportedly losing a power struggle with the prime minister’s fiancée and Allegra Stratton he made the decision to make an early departure which was confirmed after Cummings was photographed leaving downing street with a box of his personal belongings.
The director of communications, Lee Cain has also left today who had also created the impression he would be staying until the end of the year. Mr. Cain has supposedly left under similar circumstances to Cummings; however, he also feared he was being sidelined after Allegra Stratton was appointed as the new press secretary.
Cummings had much control over the Government’s agenda and found himself losing power against the other in the prime ministers inner circle. He will suspectedly be working from home until mid-December until the time of his official resignation.
To many in Downing Street, the loss of Cummings will be a saddening time. However, it is known some Tories among the party did not operate in his favour and will not be shedding a tear over his departure.
Guto Harri, former adviser to Boris Johnson talking about Cummings said ‘You can't have someone at the heart of public life who treats the public with contempt’ and that he was way overdue leaving.
Although the full effect of his departure is not clear, one thing is for sure. The government must stay united in attempt to control the nation in its current lockdown situation for the greater good of the people.
