Celebrating Bisexuality – Bi Visibility day

Holly Woodcock

Wednesday 23rd September is Bi Visibility day, bringing Bisexual communities together from all around the globe.

On this day, every year, different events are put on to spread awareness about Bisexuality, Bi-erasure and Biphobia, which is great for all generations to be involved in.

These events take place both online and around different countries. Cities such as Manchester and Glasgow are distributing information in different ways. People in Manchester are hosting a socially distanced “BiPhoria” pub quiz, while Glasgow has a talk through the history of Bisexuality to educate everyone on its past. Though these events are targeted towards Bisexual people, you can bring along any of your Bi+ friends to help inform them too. If you search for Bi-visibility events, on social media, there is an abundance of groups that you can get involved with. Many of these are now online, due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, which makes them easier to access for many people.

Bi Visibility day may mean even more this year, compared to previous years, as the worldwide lockdown will have affected people in multiple ways. Having groups to join, people to converse with and activities to participate in with will help those who have been struggling with their sexuality over the past 6 months, as well as giving others a chance to meet new people or get involved with something fun, all while being wholly educational at the same time.

It is essential to spread awareness on Bisexuality in a variety of ways so that we can learn to understand what it is, and how Biphobia and Bi-erasure can severely affect people and their mental health. Everyone can get involved with spreading awareness by retweeting posts, sharing Instagram stories, and by simply doing research online. Creating a supportive, safe, and informative environment is solely important and will bring people together during this pandemic.
