After months of speculation, on September 21st, Ellen DeGeneres will be returning to her talk show to discuss her scandal. Addressing the treatment of her staff, and the guests she has interviewed, in an attempt to collapse the social media controversy.
In August, social media platforms became busy with rumours of Ellen DeGeneres mistreating her colleagues, turning the workplace into a “toxic environment.” An article was published by BuzzFeed, who interviewed her employees to investigate the issues staff were facing, with many coming forward commenting on her racist remarks, alongside bullying.
Ellen denied these accusations saying “Everyone would be treated with respect” and that she was learning “that people who work with” her “are speaking on [her] behalf and misrepresenting who [she is] and that has to stop.”
After this, more people started speaking out about how they were affected by Ellen’s comments, actor Brad Garrett stated that the people who work for The Ellen Show “Know more than one who were treated horribly” by Ellen. This tweet was backed by Lea Thompson, which created more speculation with people online.
People were suddenly realising it wasn’t just Ellen, but also some of her employees, who were mistreating those around them.
Despite the controversy, celebrities like Katy Perry and Jay Leno, were amongst a few, who have showed their support for Ellen stating that their experiences have only ever been “positive,” while others showed their support by posting “I stand with Ellen” on Instagram.
Ellen has made two public apologies, but neither have been easy to accept. Hopefully, her statement on her show will be more promising, and honest, so her viewers, and past employees see reason to accept her apology.
