Blackburn v Sheffield United Match Review

Matthew Grimshaw

The Blades started the game off in explosive fashion, attacking right from the off and opening the scoring just two minutes In through a spectacular Rhian Brewster volley, his first league goal for the Blades. The opportunity arose when United countered down the right-hand side. A cross from captain Billy Sharp found an unmarked Brewster in the Blackburn box.

The hosts spent most of the half behind, but their persistent pressure soon prevailed when on loan Brighton and Hove Albion winger Reda Khadra scored his first goal in Blue and White in the 37th minute. Cutting in from the left-wing, beating defender Chris Basham before striking and hitting the back of the net, thanks to a slight deflection on its way in. Leaving Swedish international Robin Olsen static between the sticks. Drawing the curtains on a fairly even first half of football.

The second half was a very different story. A very disappointing half for the Blades, leaving the 5,000 traveling fans utterly disappointed. The Blades defence was split again just shy of the hour mark when Rovers midfielder Lewis Travis played an exquisite pass to on loan Leeds winger Ian Poveda who then squared the ball to Chilean forward Ben Brereton Diaz who tapped home a lovely goal for the hosts.

The hosts quickly added another to their lead when Poveda got himself on the scoresheet when his shot was parried by Olsen, Poveda then followed up on the loose ball in the United box when he took it round Olsen and slotted it neatly into the bottom right corner. A composed finish from the loanee, his first for the club and a goal that helped the Columbian pick up the Man of the Match award.

Overall, a very disappointing game for the Blades, one that started off to promisingly but ended pretty poorly. There was plenty of frustration for Slavisa Jokanovic men as the travelled home empty handed. The Blades drop to 18th in the table, with now only one win their last 5 matches. The hosts move to 7th in the table, gaining their 3rd win in the last 4 games. Swiftly putting the 7-0 thumping from Fulham In midweek behind them.
