On Saturday, the Musical performance on Britain’s Got Talent left the nation in tears as three of the West Ends largest musicals came together to present a beautiful medley.
Members from Mary Poppins, Les Miserables, and Phantom of the Opera, including Michael Ball, came together to sing some infamous songs, such as One day more, to emphasise the importance of theatres being part of our culture, spreading a message of hope that they will open one day soon.
After the casts’ inspirational and moving performance, people tweeted their thoughts and #savethearts became a trending topic. Some people said that the medley “expressed the amazing feelings the Arts spread” bringing back the experience of “happiness” and “excitement.” Others stated that this was a reason to “bring back theatrical productions” so that families and friends can be “enticed by something fun and amazing;” especially around the Christmas period as this is when theatre productions are at their peak.
Not only did the public fall in love with this performance but the Britain’s Got Talent judges were also in awe, as well as the hosts Ant and Dec, and they even stood up to applaud them. Once again, the arts were bunching society together by illuminating a cheerful atmosphere, which has been missing since lockdown started.
This act was a missing piece of a puzzle that needed completing. Now there is a large amount of hope that Government officials will start to see the vitality of the Arts and its productions, and start to allow live performances by spring 2021 – even if they are shown over television or online – so the support can be restored and regenerated within the community.
However, there was some good news as Michael Ball announced that there were hopes of Les Misrables having a six week live concert, arriving in Christmas, at a London theatre. Hopefully this production will go ahead and be uplifting for the Arts community.
