England won the toss on Day 1 of the first test and Joe Root deciding to bat first at the Gabba.

Things couldn’t have got off to a worst start with Rory Burns bowled around his legs By Mitchell Starc with the very first ball of the game. Next in was Dawid Malan who was brought in to steady the ship when an early wicket had fell but he was back in the sheds only scoring 6 off 9 balls. A little earlier then expected the number 1 test batter in the world and England Captain Joe Root. The Yorkshire man has been in incredible form this year scoring 1398 runs this year. But a beauty from Josh Hazelwood sent him scoring a duck. Stokes came and went for 5 in his first test game this year due to mental health.

Finally a batter showed a bit of grit and it came in the way of 23 year old Ollie Pope scoring 35 runs he was joined with Jos Butler who was playing his first test down under he also showed a bit of resistance scoring 39 when both players went the end was in sight and despite Woakes helping himself to 20, the new Australian Captain Pat Cummins got 5-38.

The clouds came over and it rained and with the possibilities of thunderstorms they called it off for the day with England all out for 147 and Australia coming out on Day 2.
