Ever since the UK eased the social distance restrictions in July and the government encouraged the public to “eat out” the number of cases continued to rise across the country.
Because of this the University of Sheffield have paused all face-to-face teaching until the 19th of October, on Monday the 5th of October the university published an overwhelming 500 recorded cases since September.
In a statement, the university said: "In response to the increase in Covid-19 cases in the city and within our university community, the number of our students self-isolating and the likelihood of more stringent local measures being implemented shortly, we have taken the precautionary measure to temporarily suspend face-to-face teaching.”
We spoke to Harry Smith who is currently studying BSc Cyber Security at the University of Sheffield and we asked what him what he thinks about the new restrictions that have been implemented and the impact that they will have on students.
He says, “I think that pausing face-to-face teaching will have a moderate impact on my education as being able to ask questions in person is a lot easier than having to wait online for a response.”
Accommodations are also offering support and advice for students during these challenging times. For example, they are offer a daily check-in service for students that are symptomatic or have tested positive and support for students to access any food or medication they may require.
