Local lockdowns, and the new restrictions, have limited where we can go and what we can do with our friends and family. South Yorkshire is packed with hidden gems, and small business that need support during this period. Here are 5 places you can visit whilst having socially distanced fun!
1. Wentworth Woodhouse
Hidden in Wentworth, Rotherham, is one of the largest stately homes in Europe. From Saturday, the house is open for tours, and the tearoom is open for a socially distanced coffee, a lovely warm plate of food, or a slice of cake. Getting into the house is free and there are an array of safety precautions put in place to keep people safe. As well as the tearooms and tours, the 50 acres of garden is open for people to attend. Visiting the garden costs £5 for adults, £2.50 for children, and is free for under 5’s, if you pay online – if you pay at the gate, it’s £7.50 for adults, £3.50 for children, and free for Under 5’s. This small fee helps support the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, which allows the house and gardens to be open for the public and means that different activities can take place for everyone to enjoy. For a lovely autumn day out, Wentworth Woodhouse is a beautiful place to visit.
2. Magna
Located in Templebrough, Rotherham, Magna science centre is fun for all the family! Not only is it a great day out for everyone, it is also very educational – allowing you to learn about science and technology with hands-on activities, and four pavilions: Air, Water, Wind and Fire – what’s not to love? Formerly known as Temblebrough Steelworks, Magna brings the past alive by showing you how people used to work in the conditions there, with visual and sound presentation. Magna opens in the October half term, which is when you can purchase tickets and let the fun commence!
3. Experience Barnsley - Barnsley museum
In the Town Hall, Experience Barnsley is a museum and discovery centre delivering people the history of Barnsley. This history is shown through artefacts, films and documents that have been collected over a period of time from people who have lived and worked within the town. Plummeting into local heritage is a great experience for children and adults, and it allows you to delve into a very interesting past! Why not stop off at the café, for a bite to eat, after filling yourself with fun? Socially distanced – of course! Experience Barnsley will be a day well spent, and you can save some money too because it’s free to access.
4. Botanical Gardens
Created in 1836, the Botanical Gardens is a beautiful place to take the family, or meet with friends. Take yourself around 18 acres of land full of plants and flowers, in Sheffield, and enjoy the fresh air! As it’s an outside space, it’s suitable for the pandemic because you won’t be surrounded by a build up of people. Once you have had a stroll around the gardens, stop at Curator’s House restaurant and Tea Rooms for coffee and food. Visit their website to view the events they have coming up for the next season, you won't be disappointed.
5. Millennium Gallery
Also based in Sheffield is Millennium Gallery, which is a museum displaying the city’s Metalwork and Ruskin collection, alongside works of art, fashion and design. It currently has altered opening times due to the Coronavirus, but if you pre-book online you will be guaranteed a place to look around the museum. If that isn’t enough, step outside to visit the café, or take yourself on an adventure around Sheffield city centre. However, you will be enticed by the artefacts the Millennium Gallery has to offer – for no cost!
These are only a few of the great things you can do around South Yorkshire this autumn, even with the Coronavirus stopping us from doing normal activities. Ensure you are adhering to the rules in place, wear a mask, stay 2 meters away from others, but make sure you have some fun!
