Ryan Clarke, 32, from Hull has been in hospital since 2016 after fears that he would self-harm.

He was originally diagnosed with schizophrenia when he first entered hospital however when he was 28

he was diagnosed with Autism. Until Monday the 8th November he had spent the previous 5 years in a psychiatric unit. He will be living independently with carers, his mother revealed.

Patients who are admitted to hospital with autism are often admitted due to lac of care packages being available as well as mental health problems that can be caused by autism.

NHS figures show that the number of autistic patients that are detained in hospital rose from 1,105 to 1,215 between 2015 and 2021. The Department of Health and Social Care are believed to be investing 62 million into communities and supporting discharges from hospital.
